Why isn't the accelerometer zero at rest?

An accelerometer at rest relative to the Earth's surface will indicate approximately 1 g upwards (~9.81 m/s^2). This is because any point on the Earth's surface is accelerating upwards relative to the local inertial frame (the frame of a freely falling object near the surface).
