Overview
The release notes offer information about updates including algorithmic, new, or enhanced features (tests, conditions, outcome metrics, instructions), functional, platform, and firmware as part of the latest Opal V2R v3.2 software which affects Motion Studio (MS), Mobility Lab v2 (ML), and Moveo Explorer (ME). The last available versions of the software were 2019.1 (deployed March 29, 2019), with the 2019.1-hotfix version (deployed June 16, 2022) addressing security vulnerability only.
For a history of previous releases, please see the Application Release Notes & Errata.
Recording Modes:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- Active In-Clinic: formerly ‘Streaming’ mode, 128Hz sample rate, all inertial sensors enabled
- Active Remote: formerly ‘Logging’ mode, 128Hz sample rate, all inertial sensors enabled
- Passive Actigraphy: NEW – 30Hz sample rate, accelerometer only enabled
- Passive Lumbar: NEW – 100Hz sample rate, accelerometer and gyroscope only enabled
Algorithmic Updates:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- Walk: The gait tracking algorithms now provide estimates of the distance walked (in a “Walk Distance” metric), plus improved detection and characterization of gait events in short recordings and for subjects with severely impaired gait and balance.
- Sit-to-Stand: The updated algorithms better detect Sit-to-Stand events from subjects with impaired balance and mobility as well as lean angle and test duration.
- Timed-up and Go: like the Sit-to-Stand algorithm, the optimized algorithms result in improved estimates of the test duration and lean angle.
- Orientation estimates: updates to the numerical precision of the algorithms have improved estimates of sensor orientation for trials with extremely slow or subtle movements.
- Orientation invariance: Except for Passive Lumbar which uses Mobilise-D algorithms for passive gait, the algorithms are now invariant to sensor orientation.
- Turning: The updated algorithms improve the underestimation of turn angles due to short-duration hesitations by people with neurological disorders. The updated Turn algorithm merges consecutive turns in the same direction with short hesitations.
- Sway: All sway metrics are now produced for both the sternum and lumbar sensors.
New Instrumented Tests and Test Conditions:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- 6-Minute Walk Test (6 MWT) with distance produced
- Sensor Placement Tests: These tests (one for each foot and hand) are brief (3-second countdown and 3 seconds of recording) to help ensure correct sensor placement.
-
New Sway Conditions:
- Feet together, eyes open, firm surface
- One foot, eyes open, firm surface
- Tandem stance, eyes open, firm surface
- Seated
-
Tremor:
- Postural – Arms Forward
- Postural – Arms Lateral
- Resting
- Hand Pronation-Supination (Left and Right) - Bradykinesia test
- Heel Tapping (Left and Right) - Bradykinesia test
- Toe Tapping (Left and Right) - Bradykinesia test
- Fast Alternating Hand (Left and Right) - Bradykinesia test
- Passive Actigraphy*
- Passive Lumbar* – Mobilise-D passive gait and Opal System passive turning
*Recording Mode must match. Select the Passive Actigraphy and Passive Lumbar tests when you create a trial from data logged to your Opals or from existing h5 recording.
New Outcome Metrics:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
-
Walk & SAW:
- Walk Distance: Unlike other Walk metrics, this outcome is computed from every detected step, not just the valid stride pairs (aka gait cycle pairs). It uses an estimate of the horizontal distance traveled by each step during the walking trial to compute the overall walk distance metric.
- Valid gait cycles: This is now visible within the outcome report versus under the pop-up “i” at the top of the report.
- Arm swing range of motion: Renamed from “arm range of motion”.
-
Walk, SAW, & TUG:
-
Turns: The following metrics were added:
- Average velocity (degrees/s): Average angular velocity of the turn.
- Direction (CW, CCW): Direction of the turn expressed as clockwise (0) or counterclockwise (1).
- Hesitations (No.): Total number of hesitations, slowing, or pauses detected during the turn.
- Turns (No.): Renamed from N (#).
-
Turns: The following metrics were added:
-
360 Degree Turn:
- Peak velocity: (degrees/s): Renamed from “Turn Velocity”
- Turns (no.): Renamed from “N”.
-
Sit to Stand & TUG:
- Sit to Stand Events (No.): Renamed from N (#)
- Stand to Sit Events (No.): Renamed from N (#)
-
Sway:
- All sway metrics are now produced for both the sternum and lumbar sensors.
Updated Test Instructions:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- All test instructions have been updated to help provide better guidance. Subject and Administrator tabs have been changed to Test Administration and Test Setup Instructions.
Functional Updates:
Products affected: Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- More concise and actionable feedback from the data analysis phase when warnings or errors are encountered.
- Custom test instructions can now be implemented through a rich text editor instead of having to write HTML.
- CSV output format has been updated to account for new metrics and fields. Some metrics have had their decimal precision updated.
- Data Transfer format has been updated to provide a single exported file that covers all study recordings. A compact and verbose version of this export format is still available.
- Export formats provide trial times in ISO 8601 format.
- Different export formats (e.g., study metadata and metric CSV) are now put into separate subfolders within the exported folder.
- New Clario (parent company) styling. This affects our color palette, the user interface layout, and the rendering of widgets.
Platform Updates:
Products affected: Motion Studio, Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
- Java version updated to OpenJDK 21. This brings with it several bug fixes and mitigates vulnerabilities present in the previous version (Oracle JDK 8).
- Application Framework updated from Eclipse RCP 4.6 to 4.37. This brings better support for high-definition displays and other operating system integration points.
- Windows driver installation process simplified (now requires the installation of 3 drivers requiring a total of 6 button clicks, instead of 18 button clicks as previously required).
- New Extended Validation code signing certificate to simplify installation on Windows systems.
Firmware Updates:
Products affected: Motion Studio, Mobility Lab & Moveo Explorer
Users will be required to update the firmware on their Opal sensor(s) and Access Point(s). If the firmware update process fails, the Opal(s) may get stuck in the “Bootloader mode” and will display “Entering Bootloader..” when it is undocked, instead of the standard display. If you encounter this situation, review the following article for troubleshooting advice.
