"Application can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" on OSX

When launching the application on Mac OSX, I you may get the following error "Application can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer". This indicates that your security permissions do not allow you to run applications that were not downloaded directly through Apple's App Store.

To resolve this:

  • Open your System Preferences and navigate to the Security & Privacy page.
  • There will be a message in the lower panel indicating that an unidentified application could not be opened and will provide you with the option to open it anyway.
  • Follow the instructions and re-launch the application.
