Complete Guide: Upgrade to Latest Mobility Lab

The purpose of this guide is to walk through the steps in the update process of the most recent Mobility Lab release. This update represents several new features and improvements, and also a slightly different update process than previous versions.

Backup / Copy Existing workspace

Before starting this process, if you intend to use data previously collected in an existing workspace, you will need to copy that folder to another location on your computer before you can use it with Mobility Lab. The default location for a workspace is in the installation directory on PCs (*/Program Files/ Mobility Lab/ Workspace) and within the application itself on MacOS computers (right click on the application-> Show Package Contents-> Contents->Resources->Workspace).

Warning: Do not load an existing workspace from its original location. Newer versions of Mobility Lab will permanently alter the workspace metadata in a way where it can no longer be opened in older versions.

Locate the workspace folder and copy it to another safe location, such as your documents folder. Once the folder has been successfully copied to another location, proceed with the installation.

More information on backing up your data can be found HERE and should be reviewed before continuing with this document. We highly recommend to completing an incremental backup of your data before proceeding, as a safety net.

Notification of New Software Available

You will be notified of new software updates upon launching the application (requires internet connection). The application will display a orange lightning bolt in the upper right hand corner of the application. Clicking on the Lightning Bolt will begin the software update process. Follow through the on-screen prompts to proceed. The application will download the initial update and restart to display an Important Message. Please read the message before proceeding.

Click the link "Opal V2R Mobility Lab System - Fill out form" from the pop up window to access the customer information from.

Please complete the form.

Once complete, a link with an embedded download password will be made available to you to download for your platform of choice.

Depending on how your security settings view the downloaded installation file, you will likely need to tell the browser that it's ok to keep the file by clicking the '...' button and selecting 'Keep' from the menu.

You may also need to tell windows defender that its ok to keep the file by selecting "Keep Anyway" from the dropdown menu on the Delete button.

With the download process complete, we can begin software installation.

Installation

This version of Mobility Lab is different in that it does not overwrite the existing application and may require some input from you during the installation process to chose an installation location. While we don't expect many users will want to use an older and current Mobility Lab release in parallel, we wanted to preserve the option to continue an existing project on the same software version, or in the unlikely event that any of the software changes affect your research.

Double click the downloaded installation file and follow through the prompts to select an installation location. If you have an existing Mobility Lab installation, you will need to make a new folder to hold the new installation files, such as "MobilityLabNew" or another name of your choosing. You will not be able to select an existing Mobility Lab installation folder as the installation location.

During the installation, you will be asked to install several hardware drivers. Make sure that each driver indicates it was installed successfully before proceeding. When the installation is complete, proceed to launching the application.

Launching the application

Upon first launch of the application, you will be asked to agree to an End User License Agreement, which is required.

You will then be prompted to choose the location where you would like your workspace data to be saved. The default location is within the installation directory.

If starting from a new workspace, name your first subject group.

The system will check the firmware of any connected Opal hardware and present a firmware update, if required.

The update process will update all Opals and Access Points connected to the computer at the same time. Once the firmware update is complete, you can proceed with using the software.

Existing Workspace

If you intend to use an existing workspace, navigate to File->Switch Workspace and click the browse button to select the location where you copied the original workspace from the steps in the beginning of this guide. The application will restart to load your workspace.

Note: Do not attempt to load a workspace from an external drive, network drive or cloud service, such as OneDrive or Google Drive. Mobility Lab requires that the workspace is local to where the application is installed.

Upon loading any workspace from an older version of Mobility Lab, you will be asked to reanalyze the data using the current algorithms. When re analyzation is complete, you are ready to collect data or view previously collected trials and subjects.
